Riassunto
Microgravity has proven to be an ideal environment for investigations of several
phenomena that are normally masked by gravity. Researches in this field were
started since the 1980s.
Opportunities to perform experiments in microgravity conditions have progressively
increased thanks to the development, by the European Space Agency (ESA),
of the European Columbus Laboratory, a payload element of the International
Space Station (ISS). One element of this laboratory is the Fluid Science Laboratory
(FSL), a multi user facility crated to support scientific microgravity experiments
in the field of fluid physics. Each experiment is hosted into an Experiment
Container (EC), that is an internal payload designed to be installed inside of FSL
in order to study different phenomena.
In this context, Airbus Defence and Space (DS), in collaboration with ESA and
the Scientific community, has the charge to manufacture, integrate and test the
ECs. Currently Airbus is developing two ECs: The Soft Matter Dynamics (SMD)
an EC designed for the study of foam phenomena and The Reference mUltiscale
Boiling Investigation (RUBI), an EC designed for the study boiling phenomena.
The experiments are run on-board the FSL, by dedicated software sequences
(scripts) called Experiment Procedures(EPs).
In order to support this new generation of the ECs it has been necessary to develop
a new Video Management Unit (VMU), which is the sub-system unit of FSL
dedicated to control the scientific data source inside the ECs. The goals of this
thesis can be divided in two main parts. The first one is dedicated to development
and testing of the software library used by the EP to control the new VMU.
The second topic is about the development and preliminary testing of the EP
RUBI sequence, which consist in a script designed to supporting all the scientific
activities in the frame of RUBI project.
