L'edizione a stampa delle Epistulae di Plinio (Bologna, 1504; libri 1-9) che si presenta curata da Filippo Beroaldo senior (già editore della stampa 1498 dell'epistolario pliniano) presenta numerose novità testuali: contiene l'intero libro ottavo (le lettere 8.8.3-8.18.11 non erano allora circolanti) e mostra in numerosi luoghi lezioni spesso coincidenti con quelle dell'aldina 1508, la quale utilizzò il testo dell'antico codex Parisinus (codice onciale, contenente 10 libri, di inizio VI dC, del quale oggi rimangono sei fogli siglati New York, Pierpont Morgan Lib. M 462) riscoperto nei primi anni del XVI secolo da fra Giocondo da Verona presso l'abbazia parigina di St. Victor. In altri luoghi, la stampa 1504 mostra un testo coincidente non solo con l'aldina 1508 ma anche con lezioni contenute nel codice Oxford, Bodl. Auct. L. 4.3, postillato da Guillaume Budé e integrato di due sezioni manoscritte (lettere 8.8.3-8.18.11; 10.4-10.40) che trascrivono il testo del codex Parisinus. In questa tesi si cerca dunque di valutare il comportamento dell'ed.1504 rispetto alla beroaldina 1498, e di ipotizzare quali possano essere state le fonti di questo testimone, considerando anche una testimonianza relativa a Pietro Aleandro (in Francia tra 1499 e 1502), per cui nel 1502 egli affermava di aver riportato in Italia il libro ottavo dell'epistolario pliniano. Si sono collazionati integralmente i libri 5-9, per segnalare tutti i luoghi in cui l'ed.1504 si distacca dall'ed.1498, suo probabile testo di base.
The printed edition of Pliny's Epistulae (Bologna, 1504; books 1-9) edited by Filippo Beroaldo senior (former editor of the 1498 printing of Pliny's epistolary) presents numerous textual novelties: it contains the entire eighth book (letters 8.8.3-8.18. 11 were not in circulation at the time) and shows in numerous places lessons that often coincide with those of the 1508 edition, which used the text of the ancient codex Parisinus (oncial codex, containing 10 books, from the beginning of 6th AD, of which six folios remain today, initialled New York, Pierpont Morgan Lib. M 462) rediscovered in the early 16th century by Fra Giocondo da Verona at the Paris abbey of St. Victor. Elsewhere, the 1504 print shows a text that coincides not only with the 1508 aldine but also with lessons contained in the Oxford codex, Bodl. Auct. L. 4.3, postillated by Guillaume Budé and supplemented with two manuscript sections (letters 8.8.3-8.18.11; 10.4-10.40) that transcribe the text of the codex Parisinus. In this thesis, an attempt is therefore made to evaluate the behaviour of the ed.1504 with respect to the beroaldine 1498, and to hypothesise what the sources of this witness may have been, also considering a testimony concerning Pietro Aleandro (in France between 1499 and 1502), for whom in 1502 he claimed to have brought the eighth book of the Plinian epistolary back to Italy. Books 5-9 have been collated in full, to indicate all the places where the ed.1504 departs from the ed.1498, its probable base-text.
