Riassunto
Riassunto in italiano:

English summary:
The Mu2e experiment at the Muon Campus in Fermilab (USA) is currently at an advanced stage of design and construction. The purpose of the experiment is the search for the coherent conversion of the muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. The Mu2e group of Pisa is involved, in collaboration with the Mu2e group of the National Laboratories of Frascati, Lecce, Caltech and Fermilab, in the design of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the experiment. The latter must operate in a hostile environment, is exposed to high doses of radiation, immersed in a magnetic field of 1 Tesla intensity, and must operate in vacuum. The problems of resistance to radiation of electronic components and of heat dissipation developed by electronics have been the subject of accurate studies and only electronic components whose compatibility with these environmental conditions have been chosen and experimentally verified by means of specific test campaigns. Even if this problem has been studied with extreme caution, it is likely that, over three years of time, a not insignificant fraction of the SiPM or the front-end cards have malfunctions and must be replaced during the experiment shutdowns dedicated to the periodic maintenance of the apparatus. Given that the location of the calorimeter in the experimental site will not allow easy access to replace the damaged SiPM, it is necessary to develop a special robotic arm to perform this function. The robotic arm must position itself in correspondence with the malfunctioning SiPM module/front-end unit and provide for its disassembly and replacement with an integrated unit. In the process he will have to manipulate the signal cables and optical fibers in order to create the necessary workspace. The arm will therefore consist of a series of manipulators dedicated to preparing the disassembly of the module, a series of manipulators for actual disassembly which will consist in unscrewing four screws, disconnecting two signal cables and disconnecting an optical fiber, which will then be reconnected. once the SiPM module has been replaced, and a series of manipulators for handling the unit to be replaced and the replacement unit. This robotic arm must allow precise positioning to perform the afore mentioned operations and provide a hardware and/or software positioning correction mechanism. However, some drawbacks arose during the design phase of this system. For the purpose of a simpler design of the robot, it was necessary to make some changes to part of the calorimeter, since, although few, some of its components are in their final version. It was necessary to carry out a preparatory work for the realization of a new routing of the cables preceding the detectors so that they followed a logic no longer radial but linear. In this way, the working space of the robot was increased and its access to the detectors was simplified, which posed the obstacle of having the cables and optical signal fibers in front of them. After a verification of the backplate tolerances, piece realized by INFN thanks to the collaboration with Quadrant, through a measurement with a CMM machine, a correlation was created between the individual positions of the SiPM detectors, identified with discrete coordinates of each crystal, and the continuous spatial coordinates, input for the positioning of the end-effectors, that is the coordinates of the robot work plane (x,y plane). In this way, the relationship between the coding of the crystal corresponding to the damaged detector with the spatial coordinates of the position it occupies in the working area of the robot has been made biunique.
Furthermore, the new linear logic of cable routing, which will grant a better swing to the robot, required a verification of the old lengths of the approximately 1300 cables coming from the signal processing crates that connect to the individual detectors, given the need to ensure that each channel can be effectively connected. The process of calculating the new lengths revealed that some of the old cables were overabundant, but unfortunately too short for the new allocation logic. The latter, however, has the advantage, in addition to facilitating the maintenance robot, also of distributing the channels associated with the crystals affected by a higher flux density more evenly among the different calculation boards, which are assumed to be subject to a greater number of detections and therefore, of data to be processed. In this way, the computational load of each board is more uniform, and the calculation efficiency improved. Having ascertained that linear logic was therefore convenient, brackets were subsequently designed and built to support a sector of cables that followed the new linear logic and then mounted for the test on the mockup of the backplate located in Frascati.
In conclusion, the basis was laid for the realization of the robot that could carry out the afore mentioned operations and perform the task. A Cartesian portal structure was opted for supporting one or more heads equipped with end-effector prototypes. The initial phase of collecting the constraints, loads, interfaces and characteristics of use that motivated their first prototyping was developed.
For the pieces that can be purchased on the market, a list of materials was made, while for the components to be created ad hoc for a unique system like this, technical drawings were made for future production using machine tools or 3D printing. In the future, this thesis could be the basis for the realization of the system in practice, for its calibration and subsequently to carry out operational tests directly at the national Fermilab laboratories, where the two calorimeters will be assembled and definitively placed by 2024.
