La seguente tesi propone un'analisi di un'opera tanto discussa quanto fondamentale, sia per la sua epoca, che per la lunga produzione di un autore prolifico come Thomas Mann: le "Considerazioni di un impolitico". Attraverso la lente di questo saggio è possibile osservare come il pensiero conservatore-nazionalista (a sua volta filtrato da una lente estetica) nella Germania belligerante fosse all'ordine del giorno e necessario per creare una forte consapevolezza identitaria tedesca. La Germania (Kultur) e l'Occidente (Zivilisation), due sfere opposte e contrastanti, l'una rappresentata dal Romanticismo, dalla musica (canto, Lied), dalla poesia e dall'irrazionale e l'altra rappresentata dall'Illuminismo, dal romanzo e dalla ragione. Nella sua opera, pur utilizzando forti, colorite e biasimevoli affermazioni, Mann protegge, conserva, celebra, innalza quelle che per lui sono le gemme della cultura e dell'identità tedesca.

The following thesis proposes an analysis of a work that is as controversial as it is fundamental, both for its time and for the long production of a prolific author such as Thomas Mann: the "Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man". Through the lens of this essay, it is possible to observe how conservative-nationalist thinking (in turn filtered through an aesthetic lens) in belligerent Germany was the order of the day and necessary to create a strong German identity consciousness. Germany (Kultur) and the West (Zivilisation), two opposing and contrasting spheres, one represented by Romanticism, music (song, Lied), poetry and the irrational, and the other represented by the Enlightenment, the novel and reason. In his work, while using strong, colourful and blameworthy statements, Mann protects, preserves, celebrates and elevates what for him are the gems of German culture and identity.
