Questa tesi si propone di analizzare completamente l’opera meno esaminata del bucaniere William Dampier, Two Voyages to Campeachy. Il testo fornisce molti spunti di riflessione, che interessano varie discipline scientifiche e umanistiche. Si è utilizzato, perciò, saggistica di vario genere per riuscire ad analizzare correttamente quest'opera. Da un punto di vista storico, è stata trattata, non solo la vita dell’autore, ma anche lo sviluppo della pirateria, in particolare l’importanza che essa ha raggiunto nel corso del Colonialismo. È stato necessario, perciò, prendere in esame anche la situazione diplomatica del periodo, nello specifico quella della Guerra di Successione spagnola e il ruolo che il commercio del campeccio ha avuto in essa. L’opera costituisce la base per numerose teorie scientifiche in ambito meteorologico, idrografico, oceanografico e biologico. Inoltre, resoconti di viaggio di questo genere sono risultati importanti anche per i primi studi antropologici. Riguardo a ciò, all’interno dell’elaborato si è analizzato il rapporto tra coloni e colonizzati, concentrandosi soprattutto con le relazioni che intercorrevano tra le popolazioni sudamericane e i pirati. In particolare, si è analizzata la storia di Jeoly, il quale fu portato in Inghilterra dallo stesso Dampier. Per concludere, si è analizzato come l’opera si contestualizzi tra i generi della letteratura di viaggio e come la figura del ‘pirata’ sia stata manipolata dagli autori di varie epoche, sviluppando un modello immaginario che si è mantenuto fino ai nostri giorni. Infine, si sono analizzate le influenze che questo scritto ha avuto su opere importanti della letteratura inglese, in particolare Robinson Crusoe di Daniel Defoe. In seguito alla prima parte argomentativa, si è fornito anche un commento linguistico, analizzando tutte le caratteristiche peculiari del testo originale e le strategie con cui sono state tradotte. Infine, si è proceduto con la traduzione dell’opera.

This dissertation sets out to fully analyse the least examined work of the buccaneer William Dampier, Two Voyages to Campeachy. The text provides much food for thought, involving various scientific and humanistic disciplines. Therefore, essays of various kinds have been used in order to correctly examine this work. From a historical point of view, not only the life of the author was dealt with, but also the development of piracy, in particular the importance it reached during Colonialism. Therefore, it was also necessary to examine the diplomatic situation of the period, specifically that of the War of the Spanish Succession and the role that the logwood trade played in it. The work forms the basis for numerous scientific theories in the fields of meteorology, hydrography, oceanography, and biology. Moreover, travel accounts of this kind were also important for early anthropological studies. Regarding this, the relationship between colonists and colonised was analysed in the dissertation, focusing above all on the relationship between South American populations and pirates. The story of Jeoly, who was brought in England by Dampier himself, was particularly examined. In conclusion, it was analysed how the work is contextualised within the genres of travel literature and how the figure of the 'pirate' has been manipulated by authors of various eras, developing an imaginary model that has been maintained to this day. Lastly, it was investigated the influence of this writing on important works of English literature, focusing on Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Following the first argumentative part, it was also provided a linguistic commentary, which analyses all the peculiar features of the original text and the translation strategies used to translate them. In the last section, it is provided the translation of the work.
