La tesi si pone l’obiettivo di analizzare, tradurre e commentare l’antologia di saggi Disability Visibility, curata da Alice Wong e pubblicata a New York dall’editore Vintage Books nel 2020. Accanto alla traduzione, ci si propone di inserire le prospettive individuali, di autrici e autori dei saggi, all’interno di un quadro teorico e accademico sulla disabilità. La tesi si articola in tre capitoli, a cui si affiancano il commento traduttivo e la traduzione con testo a fronte.
Nel primo capitolo, vengono fornite alcune direttrici sull’antologia e sulla curatrice; in particolare, il volume viene inquadrato nel suo contesto socioculturale, con riferimenti alla biografia e alle attività della curatrice. Viene poi proposta una riflessione critica sul rapporto tra minoranze e rappresentazione, soffermandosi su come le persone con disabilità vengono raffigurate dai mass media contemporanei.
Nel secondo capitolo, di stampo teorico, si propongono delle riflessioni sulla disabilità di carattere storico. Si passano in rassegna le modalità con cui la disabilità è stata recepita nel corso delle varie epoche storiche, fino ad arrivare alla contemporaneità. Vengono quindi analizzati i principali modelli teorici della disabilità e le prospettive dei Disability Studies, sia in ambito italiano che internazionale; i modelli teorici sono, infine, illustrati collegandoli direttamente alle prospettive che emergono dai saggi contenuti in Disability Visibility.
Nel terzo capitolo, di carattere linguistico-traduttologico, si discutono, in generale, le scelte intraprese in traduzione. Si affrontano concetti come quello di semiosfera, linguacultura, addomesticamento ed esotizzazione; si argomenta la scelta della dominante con riferimento diretto al testo; si riflette su prospettive e direzioni della traduzione.
Nel commento traduttivo, poi, ciascun saggio viene affrontato individualmente, analizzato nei suoi livelli linguistici e contenutistici; si mettono in luce le principali difficoltà traduttive, i punti di convergenza e divergenza tra inglese e italiano, e si propongono delle soluzioni pratiche, argomentandole.
Segue, infine, la traduzione di ventidue saggi tratti da Disability Visibility, con testo a fronte in inglese.

The thesis aims at analyzing, translating and commenting the anthology of essays Disability Visibility, edited by Alice Wong, and published by Vintage Books in New York, 2020. Along with the translation, the specific perspectives of the essays’ authors are inscribed into the theoretical and academic framework of disability and Disability Studies. The structure of the thesis consists of three chapters, together with a translation commentary and the translation with parallel text.
In the first chapter, information about the volume and the editor is provided; more specifically, the anthology is framed within its sociocultural context, with reference to the biography and activities of the editor. A critical reflection upon the relationships between minorities and representation is proposed: in particular, how people with disabilities are portrayed in modern mass media.
In the second chapter, which is mainly theoretical, historical reflections on disability are provided. The ways in which disability has been perceived during each historical period are investigated, up to the present day. Then, the most prominent theoretical models of disability are analyzed, along with the approaches put forward by Disability Studies, both in the Italian and international context; finally, the theoretical models are illustrated through their connections with the points of view included in the essays of the anthology.
In the third chapter, which has a linguistic-translational character, the choices made when translating are discussed in general. Concepts such as semiosphere, language-culture, domestication and foreignization are put forward, and the idea of a dominant element in translation is discussed as well. Some insights about the directions adopted when translating are offered.
Furthermore, in the translation commentary, each essay is investigated individually, and analyzed in its linguistic and content-related aspects; light is shed on the main translation difficulties and on the convergences and divergences existing between English and Italian, with the argumentation of several empirical solutions.
Finally, the translation of twenty-two essays from Disability Visibility follows, together with parallel text in English.
