Optimum tailoring of pre-stresses in statically indeterminate structures to increase damage tolerance

The possibility of increasing the load carrying capability of damaged 2D trusses is investigated, using a tailored set of pre-stresses. An optimization problem, with pre-stresses being the design variables, and modulus of the load applied to the structure being the objective function to be maximed is formulated and solved using standard gradient-based methods and gradient-less methods. Optimizations are made for different damage scenario. Optimum set of pre-stresses are found to increase the load carrying capability of the structure. Volume redistribution of material is taken into consideration, considering the areas of the truss members as additional variables. Results are compared and optimum solutions effectiveness on damage scenario they were not tailored for is analyzed.
