Il presente studio propone un’analisi storico artistica del Santissimo Crocifisso dei Bianchi di Lucca. I primi tre capitoli introducono il contesto in cui l'opera è stata realizzata nel XIV secolo: le vicende politiche ed economiche lucchesi; il panorama artistico della scultura, pittura e oreficeria; la storia dello sviluppo dell'iconografia del crocifisso. Il quarto capitolo riporta le notizie relative al movimento devozionale dei Bianchi del 1399, cui l’opera è legata. Si è operato un riordino della storiografia e un'indagine sui documenti d’archivio lucchesi. Il quinto capitolo discute l'opera sotto il profilo artistico, con confronti ed esempi della fortuna stilistica del Crocifisso. Su quest'ultimo aspetto si presenta, in chiusura, un paragone con altri casi toscani.
This thesis inspects the genesis of the Santissimo Crocifisso dei Bianchi of Lucca, linked to the fourteenth century historical and artistic context. The first three chapters report the political and economic situation of the city, an overview of the artistic context and a summary of the development of the crucifixion iconography throughout history. The fourth traces the features of the international occurrence of lay devotion and then focuses on the lucchese case, with a summary of all the survived archive sources. The fifth chapter analyses the Crocifisso, provides comparisons and suggests how some of its features may have left a legacy. On this last topic, the chapter presents examples of more successful crosses to draw some conclusions on the reasons of such legacy for the Santissimo Crocifisso.
