Summary
Gareth Evans's work in the field of Philosophy of Language in the 1980s explores the possibility of a naturalization of a theory of meaning for concepts and natural language, with the help of his own interpretation of some notions derived from Frege and Russell. He makes an attempt to explain the common nature of the various way in which humans and organisms in general, in their being informational systems, can be said to mean something while using words (a human-only feature) or concetpual representations of states of affairs of the world. In his Varieties of Reference, a brand new story of the phenomenon of reference is analysed and proposed, where reference itself is understood together with the nature of the organisms that have to make use of it. Evans's positions represent an undeniable challenge, but they also can't avoid to face some critical points: in particular, the discussion with Ruth Garrett Millikan's naturalization of meaning, and the debate with John McDowell regarding the notion of a nonconceptual content.
