The aim of this work is to produce a subtitled version of three Spanish short films, an audiovisual genre which is often related to the field of subtitling. In the first Chapter, a brief history about cinema is presented, focusing on the development of short film and its main characteristics. It also provides some information about the plot and major themes of the short films which will be later analyzed. Chapter 2 deals with theoretical aspects of audiovisual translation; it compares dubbing and subtitling, the two methods which are mostly employed, investigating the main differences between them. Chapter 3 concentrates on a description of subtitling process and its main features, including technical aspects such as the phases and standard procedures which are to be followed by the subtitler. The last part, Chapter 4, highlights the different steps of the translation into Italian of the original scripts. For each short film, it explains some of the strategies used to reduce the text in order to create the subtitled versions, and the main translation problems will be commented. Finally, the Appendix presents the original dialogues, their translation and the subtitled versions.
