Abstract (Inglese)
Abstract (Italiano)
The field current of alternators is often provided by rotating diode rectifiers fed by exciters, i.e. inverted-layout coaxial auxiliary synchronous generators. The control of such current is achieved indirectly by regulating the field current of the exciter. This thesis investigates the possibility to equip the exciter with hybrid excitation by adding surface-mounted permanent magnets designed to sustain the genset operation at a selected load condition. This permits to reduce the excitation losses and to operate the genset even in case of failure in the exciter field system.
