Summary
The measure of Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) as an estimate of renal function in the critical patient is obtained with different methods. The ones most used clinically, like creatinine clearance, serum creatinine and serum cystatin, suffer from low accuracy and slow responsiveness to kidney function variations. Gold standard methods are seldom used in the critical patient setting both for the high cost or low viability, like plasma clearance of non iodinated contrast media, Cr-EDTA clearance and inulin clearance.
This master thesis describes a method for fast and accurate measure of GFR by exploiting the renal excretion physiology of the sulfate ion. The method has been also experimentally tested and evaluated against clinical methods of GFR measure on an animal model.
