Partendo dalla cosiddetta “politica degli operatori” varata dai fratelli Lumière alla fine del XIX secolo, l’analisi si concentra sul rapporto che si instaurò col Giappone e le modalità e i personaggi che hanno permesso l’entrata degli operatori nel paese nipponico. Fondamentale risulta l’analisi della situazione socio-politico-culturale del Giappone di fine Ottocento in cui vennero catapultati i due operatori di macchina Constant Girel e Gabriel Veyre. Il secondo capitolo affronta un altro imprenditore francese che inviò alcuni operatori di macchina in Giappone: Albert Kahn. L’analisi si sofferma sui cosiddetti Archivi del pianeta e sul lavoro di Jean Brunhes, specialista di Geografia umana. Kahn inviò una serie di operatori di macchina in tutto il mondo, tra cui in Giappone. Infatti, la ricerca approfondisce la situazione sociopolitica giapponese dei primi due decenni del XX secolo e si conclude con la storia e la produzione giapponese degli operatori Albert Dutertre, Stéphane Passet e Roger Dumas. Infine, si vuole sottolineare quali sguardi e quali dinamiche di potere si instaurarono tra gli operatori francesi e i giapponesi. Attraverso l’analisi di due vedute di Constant Girel e di Gabriel Veyre, si dimostra la loro applicazione di uno sguardo orientalista modellato sul Giapponismo e sulle fotografie di Yokohama. Successivamente, due brevi film di Roger Dumas dimostrano la sua applicazione del “paradigma del salvataggio”. Il capitolo termina con l’applicazione delle nozioni di “Nativized orientalism” e di “Internalized orientalism” su due film, riconoscendo quel passaggio che avvenne dall’applicazione di uno sguardo unidirezionale verso i giapponesi alla creazione di un interessante equilibrio di poteri nelle pellicole.
Starting from the so-called "operators' policy" launched by the Lumière brothers at the end of the 19th century, the analysis focuses on the relationship that was established with Japan and the methods and characters that allowed the operators' entry into the Japanese country. The analysis of the socio-political-cultural situation of late nineteenth-century Japan into which the two machine operators Constant Girel and Gabriel Veyre were catapulted is fundamental. The second chapter deals with another French entrepreneur who sent some machine operators to Japan: Albert Kahn. The analysis focuses on the so-called Archives of the planet and on the work of Jean Brunhes, a specialist in human geography. Kahn sent a number of machine operators around the world, including to Japan. In fact, the research delves into the Japanese sociopolitical situation of the first two decades of the 20th century and concludes with the history and Japanese production of the operators Albert Dutertre, Stéphane Passet and Roger Dumas. Finally, we want to underline which views and which power dynamics were established between the French operators and the Japanese. Through the analysis of two views by Constant Girel and Gabriel Veyre, their application of an orientalist gaze modeled on Japonism and the Yokohama photographs is demonstrated. Subsequently, two short films by Roger Dumas demonstrate his application of the “rescue paradigm”. The chapter ends with the application of the notions of “Nativized orientalism” and “Internalized orientalism” on two films, recognizing the transition that occurred from the application of a unidirectional gaze towards the Japanese to the creation of an interesting balance of power in the films.
