Summary
The left atrium (LA) enlargement in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a marker of disease progression and adverse prognosis. LA dilatation in patients with HCM is multifactorial and related to left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOT), Mitral regurgitation (MR), left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, LV raised endiastolic pressures and genetic individual factors. Surgical myectomy is the gold standard procedure for the reduction of the LVOT obstruction, reducing also SAM-related mitral regurgitation (MR). Long term effects on the LA size and remodeling following successful surgical myectomy are unknown.
