Abstract (Inglese)
Abstract (Italiano)

The 5G developments enhance the transmitter and receiver functionalities, but the wireless channel propagation remains an uncontrollable system. Looking beyond 5G, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a two-dimensional surface of engineered material whose properties are reconfigurable rather than static. The long-term vision of the RIS technology is to create smart radio environments, where the wireless propagation conditions are co-engineered with the physical-layer signaling, and investigate how to utilize this new capability. After covering the foundations of RIS-aided communications, this thesis aims at evaluating the performance loss, in terms of spectral efficiency, incurred by the presence of an undesired signal generated by a malicious jammer. The analysis shows that the jammer may have a strong impact on RIS-aided communications, especially if impinging from the same direction as the desired signal. Different heuristic methods to optimize the RIS are thus proposed and evaluated under different propagation conditions.
