Summary
In recent years, the guinea pig has had a great diffusion as a pet, leading veterinary medicine to deal with the main pathologies of this species. Adrenal disorders such as hyperadrenocorticism and tumors of the adrenal glands. The aim of our study was to evaluate the size of the adrenal glands in a group of healthy guinea pigs. We performed an abdominal ultrasound examination on 20 guinea pigs, 8 females and, 12 males, aged between 6 months and 4 years. All the adrenals were easily identified having the kidneys as a reference point. The ultrasounds that allowed us to measure all the adrenal glands were performed with manual restraint, and without anesthesia. The left adrenal varies in length from 16 to 8.65 (mm) and in width from 7.1 to 2.89 (mm) while the right adrenal varies in length from 15.16 to 8.58 (mm) and in width 6.82 to 2.39 (mm). Ultrasound is therefore the most suitable diagnostic test for this type of investigation and combined with the clinic it is able to provide the necessary indications for a possible setting of the necessary therapy.
