Abstract (Inglese)
Abstract (Italiano)

This thesis deals with Electric Turbo Compound (ETC) systems. The
turbocharger is coupled with an electric machine both to accelerate the
turbo eliminating turbo lag and to recover energy reducing the use of the
wastegate.
In order to evaluate its benefits, a mild-hybrid vehicle model, equipped with
lithium battery and 48V electric system, and a one-dimensional engine
model with ETC, have been realized on GT-Power. The combination of the two allows the transient behavior to be studied.
The simulations show that the application of the ETC system on already
existing powertrain does not improve fuel consumption on daily driving,
while important results can be achieved at high power, such as the adoption
of stoichiometric mixtures.
