Questa tesi esplora l’incontro culturale tra Occidente e Giappone durante il XVI secolo, analizzando il ruolo dei gesuiti, in particolare Gaspar Vilela e Luis Frois, nel periodo noto come il “secolo della cristianizzazione”. Attraverso l’analisi delle lettere di Vilela, si ricostruisce un vivido quadro del Giappone dell’epoca, con un’attenzione particolare ai templi, ai giardini e all’arte. Il missionario portoghese documenta con precisione la bellezza architettonica e paesaggistica dei luoghi visitati, evidenziando la spiritualità intrinseca della cultura giapponese.
La tesi si suddivide in tre capitoli: il contesto storico e l’arrivo dei portoghesi in Giappone, le lettere di Gaspar Vilela con la loro ricca descrizione del paesaggio culturale, e i seminari artistici gesuiti, che univano tecniche pittoriche occidentali all’estetica giapponese, dando vita all’arte Nanban. Le lettere di Vilela e Frois rivelano l’ammirazione per la cultura giapponese e il tentativo di integrarsi in una società profondamente diversa, illuminando le dinamiche interculturali e artistiche di quel periodo.

This thesis explores the cultural encounter between the West and Japan during the 16th century, focusing on the role of Jesuits, particularly Gaspar Vilela and Luis Frois, in what is known as the “Christian Century.” Through an analysis of Vilela’s letters, it reconstructs a vivid picture of 16th-century Japan, paying particular attention to temples, gardens, and art. The Portuguese missionary meticulously documents the architectural and landscape beauty of the places he visited, highlighting the intrinsic spirituality of Japanese culture.
The thesis is divided into three chapters: the historical context and the arrival of the Portuguese in Japan; Vilela’s letters, with their rich descriptions of Japan’s cultural landscape; and the Jesuit art seminars, which blended Western painting techniques with Japanese aesthetics, giving rise to Nanban art. Vilela’s and Frois’s letters reveal their admiration for Japanese culture and their efforts to integrate into a profoundly different society, shedding light on the intercultural and artistic dynamics of the period.
