Energy is the essential material resources for human survival and economy development, and our development and economy is based on fossil fuels. There is a need to have a transition towards a low carbon economy and society. Utilization of renewables is necessary for alleviating energy shortage, protecting environment and achieving sustainable economic and social development. This thesis analyses the theoretical literatures on the depletion of natural resources and on the “backstop technology”. We also use empirical analysis and data analysis, to investigate the dynamic relationship between China's energy situation and its economic growth.
