On Decembers the 8th 1943 Pope Pio XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Maria and on March the 28th of the same year the French clergy confirmed the consecration of France. In order to ratify it to an individual point of view, four reproductions of the statue of "Notre-Dame de Boulogne-sur-Mer", covering four various routes, visited the dioceses of all the national territory, including the one beyond the sea. The celebrations provoked enthusiasm and disapproval, in any case recalling a huge participation of people. It was the greatest Marian route of the 1900's called "Grand Retour", and in 60 months, from 1943 to 1948, it visited 16,000 parishes and 83 dioceses.
The present historical-religious essay analyzes this phenomenon in the view of the socio-political events occured during the Second World War, dividing the meanings of the word "Retour" to separate the spiritual purposes from the political one and to highlight the cultural implications of the Marian travel. If the evangelize and anti-communist push, shared in all the rare lay sources, it is manifest, this essay is going to demonstrate the relationship between religious events and the making of the French national identity in historical-geographic terms and the saving power of the Marian festivity during periods of individual and collective crisis, when desperation and hope fight each other win the heart of a torn and overwhelmed community and in the emergency the divine motherhood of the Madonna is proposed like the only guarantee for men's humanity.
