Main goal of the thesis "The pomerium and the ius proferendi pomerii" is to put order among published works concerning the mentioned matter, and pursuing such an aim, novel outcomes have been reached. The contents of the work deal with the definition of pomerium, described by ancient sources as the sacred boundary of the city, delimiting an area subject to auspicia urbana. Artificially attributed by ancient tradition to Romulus, although its institution should be more likely due to "Etruscan domination" (to whose religious practice the same tradition ascribes the origin), pomerium is often confused, but only by modern critics, with the fortified town on the Palatine, the so-called "Roma Quadrata". Moreover, the stratification of traditions accompanying the evolution of the right to modify the pomerial line (the ius proferendi pomerii) is elaborate. In order to reconstruct this process, it has been decisive to start from its final form: the ius prolationis developed by Emperor Claudius. To his prominent figure large part of the work has been dedicated, because he represents the best documented case of prolatio pomerii but also the acme of a process, started with Sulla, about the right reason to modify the pomerium.
