Riassunto
Regarding anti-seismic energy dissipation devices, plastic deformation of steel is one of the most effective mechanisms available for the dissipation of energy, both from the economic and technical point of view.
One type of damper that uses yielding in order to dissipate energy is the Moon shaped steel hysteretic device. The MSSH device was used at first as damper for base isolated systems. The aim of this master thesis is to change the geometry of this element in order to employ it in the superstructure. Tests are conducted on the devices in order to confirm the expected behaviour.
In this thesis two different buildings with MSSH devices are analyzed: a mid rise building (2D and 3D) and an high rise building.
Once that the devices are suitable to be used as damper, it will be studied the behaviour of the structure through multi-modal analysis, push over analysis, non-linear time history analysis and non-linear incremental dynamic analysis. From these analyses the behaviour factor, q, and the effective damping of the structures are obtained, in order to provide rules for the design of this kind of structure (using multi-modal analysis and corrective coefficients related to the ductility and the damping).
