In a world where the constant increase of oil price and pollution standards demand for more and more efficient engines, automotive companies are committed to a big effort in terms of research and development of new ways to increase engine performances and in the same time lower down polluting substances emissions.
Fuel injectors are a crucial part of this process, especially in gasoline engines, since an efficient combustion is principally due to the way the fuel is injected inside the cylinder. So, the spray development is a large part of a fuel injectors manufacturer’s R & D department’s work. In this sense, it’s very important to support this development through new instruments which could allow an increasing knowledge and characterization of injection parameters.
Continental Automotive has recently acquired new test benches for advanced spray development and this thesis’ topic will be the development of new testing techniques and functionalities for one of these benches, that is the Spray Momentum Test Bench.
