Riassunto
Complex capital goods often present an high number of components, which are usually subjected to wear and deterioration. For this reason they require Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) processes before their final replacement.
The majority of MRO companies is organized as job shop production with branched material flow, thus the production planning and control is clearly impeded. This leads to missing materials and consequently to waiting queues in front of the shop floor’s machining centers. Moreover the unknown condition of products’ individual components before their disassembly and diagnosis, increases the problem and causes stochastic work plans and uncertain processing times. Extended and fluctuating cycle times are the consequence.
This thesis proposes to investigate inefficiencies in the MRO process of three train couplings from a German railway company (Deutsche Bahn), by using an event- driven simulation. This allowed to run experiments in order to optimize the MRO process as much as possible, without disturbing the existing production system. It shows the results obtained by simulating different process configurations, thus potential optimizations of the MRO process of the couplings are provided.
