L’oggetto principale di questa tesi è la famiglia Salviati, in particolar modo ci si concentrerà sul delicato argomento delle “alleanze matrimoniali”. Si cercherà di mettere in luce i complessi meccanismi delle politiche matrimoniali che nel corso dei secoli hanno inciso profondamente sulle strutture e i legami familiari, divenendo spesso un punto focale e strategico atto a garantire il benessere sociale ed economico delle famiglie di alto rango. Si forniranno in primo luogo i dati essenziali inerenti l’Archivio Salviati e la storia della sua famiglia, secondariamente si procederà con un’ampia introduzione alla storia e al cambiamento del rito matrimoniale in Europa, in particolar modo in Italia, nel corso dei secoli. Il nucleo centrale della tesi sarà dedicato alla ricerca archivistica mostrando i risultati ottenuti dalla ricostruzione di una nuova genealogia familiare che riportasse al proprio posto anche i membri del lignaggio femminile spesso non rappresentati dalle genealogie precedenti. Una volta individuata l’intera linea femminile appartenente alla casata, si cercherà di capire non solo le strategie adottate dai Salviati nel campo matrimoniale ma quanto del patrimonio da loro in possesso sia dovuto alla riscossione dei fondi dotali delle proprie consorti e quanto di quel patrimonio sia stato effettivamente assegnato ad un’altra donna o sia eventualmente rimasto in famiglia.

The main object of this thesis is the Salviatis’ family, in particular it will focus on the delicate subject of "marriage alliances." It will try to shed light on the complex mechanisms of political matrimonial that over the centuries have had a profound effect on the structures and family ties, often becoming a focal point and act strategically to ensure the social and economic welfare of the families of high rank. It will provide first essential data relating to the Salviati’s Archive and the history of his family, secondly it will proceed with a broad introduction to the history and change of the marriage rite in Europe, especially in Italy, during the centuries. The core of the thesis will be devoted to archival research showing the results obtained by the reconstruction of a new family genealogy which would contain the members of the women lineage that are often not represented by previous genealogies. Once it has found the whole female line belonging to the family, it will try to understand not only the strategies adopted by Salviatis in the field of marriage, but also how much of their fortune it is due to the receipt of funds dowries of their wives and how much of that heritage has been actually assigned to another woman or is possibly remained within the family.
