Riassunto
RIASSUNTO
Obiettivo.

Materiali e metodi.

ABSTRACT
Aim. Retrospectively evaluate parturition cases in bitches, describing the timing of natural parturition, the medical or surgical delivery treatments, the obstetric and anesthesiological protocols used in clinical practice, the number of births, the newborns weight and stillbirths rates, the factors that may have influenced the evaluated parameters.

Animals and methods. The bitches included in the study were 38. For each subject the medical and reproductive history has been examined. It has been considered the birth method (natural or cesarean), and females were divided into 2 groups: a group of bitches that had a natural birth (Group A) and a group for those that faced a caesarean section (Group B).

Results. Group A included 20 bitches that have given birth naturally, with an average age of 3 years and 9 months. Natimortality was 6.42% of the total with an average number of puppies of 5.45 per litter. The second stage has lasted 4 hours and 51 minutes with an average time interval between puppies of 67 minutes. In Group B, in 44.4% of cases the bitches that have undergone a planned caesarean section. The average age was 4 years and 9 months. The anesthesiological protocol included in 66.6% of the cases the use of propofol for induction and in 77.8% of the bitches isoflurane was used for the maintenance. The average mortality was 12.1%, 9.4% without suppressed puppies.

Conclusions. The data obtained in our study and compared with the currently available scientific literature show us that indications usually given to owners on the time of birth are only approximate as each bitch can present individual characteristics that cannot be predicted. In our study the average time for the birth of a live puppy or a dead one falls in both cases within the physiological range. The stillbirth recorded in caesarean sections is not statistically different from that observed in natural deliveries. Low mortality in natural parturitions can be achieved with careful monitoring and, only if needed, the use of small doses of oxytocin.
