PREMESSA

The aim of the current research was to assess whether and how the presence of a dog can influence anxiety of mothers with an only child aged 0-6 years and women without children and to evaluate the skillness of owners with or without children to perceive signals of stress and to determine stress level in their own animal. For this purpose, two kinds of questionnaires were filled in by 58 mothers owners of dog with an only child aged 0-6 years, 84 mothers with an only child aged 0-6 years who didn’t have any dog and 87 female owners of dog without children: the first questionnaire was constituted by Stay Test Form Y and consisting of 20 questions for evaluation of the state of anxiety and 20 questions for evaluation of trait anxiety ; the second questionnaire, consisting of 7 questions for mothers without dog and 12 questions for mothers with dog and female owners without children, allowed to analyse owner’s interpretation about potentially stressful situations for dogs. From our research it resulted that anxiety, in particular state anxiety, is positively conditioned only in female dog owners without children, in particular state anxiety; as concerning relationship dog-owner, despite it resulted that stress level in dogs perceived by mothers is lower than stress perceived by female owners, mothers’ answers indicate that they perceive less signs of stress and potentially stressful situations for dogs. This lack of communication between owner, in particular mother, and dog, in the long run could cause a severe malaise in the dog, and turn into aggressive and dangerous behaviours towards not only the very family, but also mankind in general, provoking in this way problems of Public Health, of which dog bites are an example nowadays.
