Riassunto
Abstract
The present thesis work was carried out during the internship held at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, located in Batavia, Illinois, USA between September 2010 and March 2011. The work focused on the Muon Beamline effort of the Mu2e experiment. Particular attention was paid to the design and analysis of the detector support and installation structure.
The heart of the Mu2e detector is the T-Tracker. This component is responsible for detecting the electrons originating from the aluminum target. To distinguish signal electrons (105 MeV energy electron decay product of the neutrino-less conversion of muons to electrons) from background electrons, one needs to build a highly sophisticated detector that requires high alignment tolerances to achieve good energy and momentum resolution of the electrons.
It is critical to support the light straw-based drift chambers very accurately. It is also important that high position reproducibility of the T-Tracker is achieved, so installation procedures must maintain the high alignment tolerances.
Detailed design and analysis (analytical and using Finite Element modeling) of the T-Tracker support structure was performed to demonstrate that the T-Tracker meets all the required tolerances on the stiffness of the structural support.
A rail system was designed that can meet the reproducibility requirement of the installation procedure. A company was chosen that can produce the desired rail system and calculations were performed to optimize the position of the supports underneath the detector components.
