Riassunto
1 refers to a new communication paradigm in which there is no need of
M2M
human intervention whilst devices (sensors, handheld devices, smart phones,
i.e.
machines ) autonomously communicate to each other providing a service to
us humans.
2 is the newest standard in cellular radio communications, aimed at
LTE
greatly improving current cellular networks, and its deployment (as infrastruc-
tures and devices capable of using them) is happening in these very years.
In the near future, M2M is expected to cover a key role in our every day life,
so it seems quite normal trying to exploit the newest cellular radio technology
available to carry M2M information; this leads to many challenges, as we will
see requirements for human-driven communications are quite di erent from ones
arose by machine-driven communications.
3 (mostly based on NS34 ) is the network simulator that'll be used for
LENA
testing and performance evaluation.
Chapter 1 contains a more detailed description of M2M in terms of char-
acteristics, needs, possible using scenarios and limitations; an LTE
introduction
is carried out on Chapter 2, pointing out only a small portion of standard's
aspects, those relevant to this thesis work; Chapter 3 o ers an introduction
to NS3 and explores in greater detail LENA and the modi cations that were
needed to adapt it to this thesis's purpose; Chapter 4 shows the simulation
scenarios that were took into account and simulations's results; Chapter 5
draws the conclusions; lastly Appendix A shows some of the preliminary work
done and abandoned regarding emulation in NS3.
