The Global Position System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system employed worldwide for several civil and military uses. One of the most unwanted inconveniences is the susceptibility to electromagnetic interferences, which could be unintentional or intentional.
The thesis’s aim was to design and built a prototype of GPS antenna for anti-jamming applications. A seven elements Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna (CRPA) with PCB technology, operating in the L1 band (1575 MHz) was realized to achieve the scope. The project was developed through the Ansoft HFSS software with subsequent confirm of the simulations’ results on the realized antenna.
The prototype CRPA designed performs anti-jamming capabilities, ensuring the simultaneous positioning of three independent nulls in the pattern. The minimum depth value was 20 dB lower than the maximum one obtained by the antenna in main lobe pointing direction. The prototype’s innovative patch configuration is capable of receiving GPS signals in the L1 band and circular polarization RHCP, with a satisfying axial ratio in the coverage region. The array’s geometry, the mutual coupling effect and the number of elements were investigated for the achievement of an efficient anti-jamming capability, verified through the phase-only technique.
Considering the importance of the realization of a smart GPS-immune antenna, this study represents an optimistic starting point for further researches in order to make the antenna operating on dual band L1/L2 and to increase its elevation resolution, through non-planar array structures.
