Riassunto
The potential of Software Defined Networking (SDN) in management of traditional networks is well-known and demonstrated. A networking area that can benefit from advantages offered by an SDN architecture is the field of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and, generally speaking, the Internet of Things (IoT). These networks are designed to be self-configuring and autonomous thanks to advanced distributed protocols and algorithms. This feature provides remarkable benefits in terms of time and effort needed to develop new applications. However, it suffers from serious problems when the network objectives change going beyond the ones originally designed. In order to cope with this intrinsic drawback of IoT networks, in this work of thesis the SDN paradigm is applied to wireless sensor networks. This brings the advantages provided by the former, such as network programmability and ease of management, in the IoT area. After a preliminary phase where the state of the art regarding very first research attempts were studied, functional blocks of the proposed architecture were defined and designed. Finally, an actual implementation based on Contiki operating system was developed and tested through experiments.
