Oggetto di questa tesi è l’abbandono dei bambini in Maremma 1842-1860. In quel periodo infatti nacquero le tre Case di deposito deputate all’accoglienza dei bambini abbandonati. Ho voluto seguire il percorso di queste povere creature partendo dal momento dell’accoglienza nelle Case di deposito, alla loro prima assistenza grazie alle nutrici interne al deposito, al loro collocamento presso balie e tenutari specialmente in campagna, interessandomi di quello che accadeva nel prosieguo della loro vita fino ad un possibile e sperabile matrimonio. Nel seguire questo percorso mi sono interessato di quella rete di relazioni e complicità che ruotava intorno a loro, parlando in special modo dei parroci delle comunità di nascita dei bambini. Essi risultano le figure più importanti a cui gli amministratori degli istituti dell’infanzia abbandonata si rivolgevano per cercare di dare ai bambini quella giusta collocazione in una famiglia che potesse allevarli come figli propri. Nella tesi sono presenti vari episodi che ho potuto scegliere dalla lettura di lettere che più mi hanno colpito nella corrispondenza, e nelle annotazioni nei registri delle tre Case di deposito conservati in Archivio di Stato di Grosseto, cercando di esaminare le vicende individuali più a fondo e tentando di far emergere qualcosa che la lettura dei documenti lasciava trasparire: i sentimenti, i turbamenti, i rammarichi, i disappunti, la verità , le bugie e le emozioni di tutti i protagonisti.

The theme of this degree thesis is the children abandonment in Maremma in the years 1842-1860. The three institutions for foundlings became active at the time. I have wanted to follow the course of these children since their granting in the institutions and the first hospital care to them supplied from the nurses of the institutions. After I have spoken of their location nearby nurses and persons who lived above all in the country. I have wanted to know the most important events in the course of live of these children, how a possible marriage. Following the course of these children I have studied as well the web of relationship and complicity around them, how the parish priests. They were the most important characters to whom, the managers of the three institutions for foundlings in Maremma, asked for these children a good location in a family that had been able to bring up how their own children. In this degree thesis there are several episodes that I have chosen after the reading of many letters and documents of three institutions for foundlings kept in Archivio di Stato of Grosseto(State Archive). Grosseto is my town. I have tried to study and to see something that the reading of the letters did only to emerge: the emotions, the disappointments, the truths, the lies, of all protagonists.
