Riassunto
Humanity stands at a defining moment in history. Since the mid-1950s, growth and development have vastly improved the standards of living, enabling better quality of people life around the world. The complete spectrum of human knowledge has advanced exponentially and it has changed – and it is continuously changing – the way in which people live their lives and interact with the surrounding environment. From this perspective, no society’s progresses and no improvement of humans conditions can be achieved without development. Development becomes the vehicle by which people can pursue new challenging achievements and ensure their present and future well-being. However, development has always been considered in a separate sphere from the surrounding environment. Social environment, economic environment, natural environment, etc. have been put under enormous pressure by a merciless research of continuous progress. Thus, an abuse of the environment has been perpetuated, leading to unsustainable development paths. This evidence is clarified by looking at cities. Cities are the engines driving economic growth, and their development is crucial for ensuring prosperity and society’s progresses. However, cities are major consumers of energy and natural resources, becoming a symbol of un-sustainability. Their impact has become so powerful in social, economic and environment aspects that the only way for achieving sustainability goals on a large scale need to be found in cities. After all, the kind of world in which our descendant and we will live will be determined in urban center, since cities have become places in which dilemmas are engendered and, at the same time, most suitable and innovative solutions can be found. Thus, cities need to be smart. Social, economic and environment aspect need to work together for building a Smart City, likely the most effective answer to the profound issues of our way of development. This thesis is configured as an attempt to shed light on the definition of Smart City and to establish an effective framework to build a Smart City.
