After an overview of the special status of children’s literature, this work focuses on the complete translation from English into Italian and commentary of two atypical books written by Roald Dahl, a collection of poems and an autobiographical diary, whose atypical nature lies, on the one hand, in the age range of the target reader (the poems are addressed to adults, contrary to Dahl’s usual target reader), and on the other hand, in the peculiar genre of the diary, which aims at both entertaining and informing young readers about various topics. The commentary outlines examples of the main difficulties I had to overcome during the translation process, such as rhymes, phonological, semantic and lexical factors, popularisation strategies, puns, and intertextual and extratextual references.
