Riassunto
DICOM is the most used standard for handling, storing, printing, and tran- smitting information in medical imaging. It is supported by all main imaging acquisition devices currently available in the clinical setting.
In the last few years a lot of significant innovations has been introduced in the standard revisions in order to allow its use in veterinary and preclinical setting.
This thesis work stems from the need to make Xalt scanner (a micro-CT scanner) compliant with the DICOM standard. Therefore, the main purpose of this thesis is to develop a C++ library, named XaltDICOM, to be integrated into the Xalt software in such a way to allow the Xalt scanner to generate and handle valid DICOM files.
The first part of this paper will introduce the micro-CT technology, describe the Xalt scanner hardware architechure and show how the scanner currently works and what the scanner needs.
The second part will introduce PACS systems and DICOM standard; it will be shown what are the main issues in a PACS system and how DICOM standard try to solve them.
The third part will focus on the XaltDICOM library development: it will 3
be discussed the main features of the library and how the library implement the DICOM standard. It will also be shown the test and validation processes run on the library, together with the tools user for such tests.
Finally it will be discussed the results and the possible further developments of this project.
