Portolan is a research project run by the University of Pisa and the Informatics and Telematics Institute of the Italian National Research Council (IIT-CNR). The project started in 2010 with the aim of enhancing the current knowledge of the Internet structure at the Autonomous System level of abstraction. It was initially deployed in 2012 and since then it has been available on Android clients (i.e. smartphones). This thesis describes the design and the implementation of Portolan for desktop operating systems Linux, Windows and OS X. In this way we hope to increase the number of users exploiting Portolan facilities and this will allow the designers to obtain a more precise Internet structure.
